     Swansboro NC

Welcome to the friendly city by the sea.  Swansboro NC was originally a Algonquin Indian village on the mouth of the White Oak River.  The original name for the town was incorporated in 1783 as "Swannsborough"and was name after a former speaker of the house Samuel Swanns.  Swannsborough began to thrive and shipbuilding became the towns major industry.  The first steam boat constructed in North Carolina was built by Captain Ottway Burns. Captain Ottway Burns became famous as a commander of a privateer vessel "The Prometheus".

With the decline of shipbuilding after the civil war the main revenue of the town was with lumber and navel stores.  But the Great Depression soon had an impact on these trades.  The only avenue for the towns people was to turn to the sea and the fishing industry.

FUN, FISH AND FOOD

Fun is part of Swansboro's main ingredient.  Come down during the fall of the year and you will smell the seafood and hear the laughter as you get close to the Swansboro annual Mullet Festival.  The Swansboro Mullet festival is held in the second Saturday in October every year.  Come down and see all the crafts, play a few games and "eat sum mullet".

The Aquariums have completed expansion of all three facilities, Pine Knoll Shores, Roanoke Island and Fort Fisher, doubling the size of each.
